FTTH Agentic Network Planner for Global Inclusive Broadband

 

 

Digital networks form the crucial foundation for connecting the world and serving people's livelihoods. Robust and inclusive communication infrastructure is key to bridging the global digital divide and supporting sustainable social development.

 

In 2025, a project team from the School conducted in-depth research and interviews with telecom operators and frontline engineers in multiple Southeast Asian and African countries. This effort precisely identified the practical needs and developmental pain points in infrastructure construction for telecom enterprises in the Global South. To tackle industry challenges like high construction costs and low planning efficiency, the team developed a dedicated network planning and design software: the Agentic Network Planner (ANP). The software has now been deployed on Amazon Web Services and is poised to officially launch services for global partners.

 

 

 

 

This project was led by the research team of Professor Sun Weiqiang from the Future Ready Optical Networking Technologies (FRONT) R&D Center of the State Key Laboratory of Photonics and Communications, and completed in collaboration with  Sun Telecom.
 

 

ANP  is an intelligent software core-focused on optical access network planning. Leveraging agent technology, it enables efficient, lightweight, and low-cost optical fiber network planning and design, providing support for large-scale deployments. Suitable scenarios and target users include optical fiber communication planning engineers, network design teams, technical departments of operators, overseas broadband construction project teams, as well as research/teaching institutions and industry solution providers.
 
The software is designed with the core mission of "bridging the digital divide and providing an efficient, low-cost planning tool." It pioneers the application of agent technology in optical access network planning and design, combined with a professionally optimized UI, to deliver a smooth, simple, and efficient user experience. Continuously iterated and enhanced on China Telecom’s cloud-network convergence pilot verification platform, it aims to become a benchmark in the global optical access network field as a lightweight, intelligent, and inclusive planning tool, providing stable, reliable, and efficient technical support for global broadband universal access and digital infrastructure development.

Tested Smooth Operation with 9K+ Devices, Excellent Lightweight Architecture Performance

 

The software stably supported the full-process planning and design for 9,288 devices, running smoothly throughout with no lag. Memory usage was only about 1GB, and CPU utilization was as low as 0.1%. The lightweight architecture maintained high efficiency and stability even under multi-tasking, fully capable of supporting the practical needs of large-scale access network projects, bidding farewell to lag and crashes common with traditional tools.

The software supports visual topology display and flexible multi-view management. It facilitates convenient path planning and area adjustments, automatically validates design rationality, and provides a clear, standardized, and reliably efficient interface for operations.

One-Click Report Generation + Version Management, Doubling Delivery Efficiency

 

The software supports real-time online collaboration for multiple users and design version rollback functionality, ensuring that the planning process is traceable, controllable, and reusable. It also features one-click generation of verification results, bills of materials, and project reports, significantly enhancing project delivery efficiency.

Future updates will add features like pre-connection scheme design and AI-powered automatic scanning and data entry, continuing to evolve and empower industry development.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is a commemorative day established in 2006 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) through the merger of World Telecommunication Day and World Information Society Day.

 

World Telecommunication Day was established in 1968 to commemorate the founding of the ITU and to highlight the role of telecommunications in national economic development and people's lives. World Information Society Day was established by a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in March 2006, following a call from the World Summit on the Information Society.

 

By closely linking telecommunications and the information society under a single global observance, the international community signifies the elevated status and noble responsibilities bestowed upon the telecommunications sector, recognizing its central and foundational role in building the information society.
