Demystifying PM Fiber Isolator: A Comprehensive Understanding

Date: 2025-12-01 10:28:14

Panda PM (Polarization Maintaining) fiber provides high birefringence, low attenuation, and polarization maintenance. PM fiber isolator is built with Panda PM fiber and can provide high isolation and maintain a state of polarization (SOP) of the light. This article provides a comprehensive understanding of PM fiber isolators.

What is a PM Fiber Isolator?

PM fiber isolator is a two-port micro-optic device built with panda PM fiber. It guides optical light in one direction and eliminates back reflection and back scattering of optical signal in the reverse direction. It is built with 250um bare fiber, a 900um jacket cable, or a 3mm jacket cable. In addition, the PM fiber isolator is available in single and dual stages, Faraday(based), TGG (based), and various wavelength ranges 780/850/980/1060/1030/1310/1480/1550/1064nm and L-band.

How Does PM Fiber Isolator Work?

PM fiber isolator operates based on the Faraday rotation effect to break the reciprocity of light transmission to achieve forward light passing and reverse light isolation.
A fiber isolator has three components, an input polarizer, a Faraday rotator, and an output polarizer. Light traveling in the forward direction passes via the input polarizer and becomes polarized in the vertical plane. Upon passing via the Faraday rotator, the plane of polarization has rotated 45° on the axis. The output polarizer has aligned 45° relative to the input polarizer, which allows the light to pass unimpeded. Light traveling in the reverse direction passes through the output polarizer and becomes polarized at 45°. The light will then pass through the Faraday rotator and experience an additional 45° of nonreciprocal rotation. The light is now polarized in the horizontal plane and rejected by the input polarizer, which only allows light polarized in the vertical plane to pass unimpeded.

Features and Benefits

PM fiber isolator provides the following features and benefits:
1. Low insertion loss and high return loss
2. High extinction ratio and isolation
3. High reliability and stability
4. High power handling
5. Polarization maintaining
6. Low cost and compact design

Applications

PM fiber isolator is used in fiber laser, fiber optic sensing, fiber amplifier, high-speed optical communications, telecommunications, coherent communication systems, testing instruments, CATV, EDFA, etc.

Conclusion

PM fiber isolator transmits light in only one direction. It prevents reflected light from returning to the source and signals that can cause instabilities and damage. It features low insertion loss, high power handling, isolation, extinction ratio and stability, and compact design, making it an ideal choice for application in fiber amplifiers, sensors, and lasers.
