400G OSFP Optical Transceiver Module Solution for Data Center

Data centers are beginning to grow from 100G to higher speeds, higher bandwidth, and lower latency. 400G OSFP (Octal Small Form-Factor Pluggable ) has become the next-generation backbone upgrade and new construction direction. This article will give an introduction to OSFP optical transceiver modules.

What is the OSFP Optical Transceiver Module?
OSFP is a new pluggable form factor with eight high-speed electrical lanes that support 400 Gbps via 8×50G (using PAM4 modulation). It is slightly broader and deeper than the QSFP-DD but still supports 36 OSFP ports per 1U front panel and 14.4 Tbps per 1U front-panel slot (36 × 400G). OSFP is designed with improved signal integrity and thermal performance to help the next generation of 800G optical transceiver modules that use eight lanes of 100Gbps (8×100G), allowing us to upgrade easily from 400G to 800G. Unlike QSFP-DD, OSFP does not offer native backward compatibility with 100G QSFP optics, as the physical form factor and electrical pinout are different. In addition, OSFP is available in single-mode (SM) and multi-mode (MM) fiber optic cables and includes digital diagnostics monitoring (DDM) to monitor parameters such as power, temperature, and voltage. 400G OSFP optical transceiver modules are available in OSFP SR8, OSFP DR4, OSFP DR4+, OSFP FR4, OSFP 2FR4, and OSFP LR4.
