4 Things To Look Out For in a PM Fused WDM

Date: 2025-04-16 14:29:07

PM (Polarization Maintaining) fused WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is the ideal solution for combining or separating optical signals in different wavelengths. It provides wavelength division multiplexing, polarization maintenance, low insertion loss, high extinction ratio, environmental stability, and reliability in fiber optic amplifiers, high-speed communication systems, and fiber optic instrumentation applications. Follow this article to learn about PM fused WDM.

What is a PM Fused WDM?
PM fused WDM combines two wavelengths of light in PM fiber or splits two discrete wavelengths entering the common port into two separate output ports while maintaining the polarization of the incident light. However, it is not suitable for separating output light from broadband light sources. PM fused WDM using Panda PM fiber, which allows them to maintain a high polarization extinction ratio (PER) when light is launched along the slow axis of the fiber. It is available without or with FC/PC or FC/APC connectors, wavelength combinations of 488/532, 488/633, 532/633, 532/780, 633/780, 633/840, 980/1030, 980/1064, 980/1310, 980/1550, 1064/1550, 1310/1550nmnm, etc.

What is the Role of PM Fused WDM?
PM fused WDM is based on fused biconical taper (FBT) technology. It combines or separates optical signals transmitted on different wavelengths. In addition, it provides wavelength division multiplexing while maintaining signal polarization with a high extinction ratio. PM fused WDM is used to multiplex other wavelengths, including 980/1030 nm (pulsed laser applications), 1064/1550 nm (Erbium-Ytterbium pumping), low power (300 mW, 500 mW), and high power handling (20W).

Features and Benefits
PM fused WDM provides the following features and benefits:
1. Low insertion loss and polarization-dependent loss
2. Low cost and compact size
3. High channel isolation and power handling capability
4. High extinction ratio and return loss
5. High reliability and stability
6. Polarization maintenance and epoxy-free on the optical path

Applications
PM fused WDM is used in fiber lasers, fiber optic sensing, fiber optic amplifiers, fiber optic instruments, high-speed communication systems, WDM network systems, EDFA, CATV, OTDR, PON systems, FTTx networks, power monitoring systems, etc.

Conclusion
Overall, PM-fused WDM provides the first level of bandwidth expansion for a network by increasing a fiber’s signal-carrying capacity. In addition, it has high channel isolation, low insertion loss, small size, and excellent environmental stability to meet the various needs of application scenarios.
