Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL) is progressing and planning other major fibre-optic cable projects which will see its reach high speed broadband expanding to more parts of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
According to TFL's general manager marketing strategy Sanjay Maharaj, the company is progressing with its "Fibre to the Home" project, which sees the rolling out of fibre-optic network to high demand and residential areas around the central business district, urban and peri urban areas.
"We have completed with areas like Denarau and we are working on areas like Namadi Heights, so we are definitely rolling out more high speed broadband," he said.
"What this fibre project means is that it takes fiber networks right to the homes, so our users can experience better video streaming, mainly online streaming.
"This has much more speed compared to wireless speed where it has more users, you have internet speed dropping and you have lots of buffing and all."
The massive multi-million dollar project, which had commenced some time ago, is expected to be completed in the coming years, once the targeted areas are reached.
Mr Maharaj said another project which TFL was progressing on was the Viti Levu fibre project, where the company is expanding its fibre network between Korovou and Rakiraki town.
This, he said, was in their bid to provide more connectivity to the area.
"This is in line with Government declaring it a taxfree zone to drive investment in that area," Mr Maharaj said.
"So what we think by rolling out fibre in that area, that it will enable businesses there some sort of connectivity."
The focus of the project is also driving economic activity around that area and adding resiliency to TFL's network.
"Like for now, fiber networks from Suva all the way to Lautoka via the Queens Rd, so if these fibre breaks then we will have a service outage," Mr Maharaj said.
"But with the new fiber coming in, that will give us resiliency so that the traffic will start going the other way."
The Viti Levu project, with an estimated worth of $10m, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, TFL is also in the planning stages of conducting submarine cabling projects, in line with Government's efforts of connecting Vanua Levu to the Southern Cross cable.
"The other one is government is looking to get a submarine cable between Suva and Savusavu, so to piggyback on that project is we are in the planning stages of doing underground fiber between Savusavu and Labasa," Mr Maharaj said.
This, he added, was expected to see fruition come March next year.
